Ni'ihau, the smallest of the populated Hawaiian
islands, is owned by the Robinson family of Kauai. Access to
the island is limited to the Hawaiian families who live and
work on Ni'ihau and to their relatives who have moved to other
islands. The US Navy also maintains a presence on the island,
primarily for weapons testing. Tourism is prohibited. Ni'ihau
has gained the reputation of being the most traditional Hawaiian
island. There are no phones or electricity, and the official
language is Hawaiian. It is spoken almost exclusively in daily
life, and is used in the schools. |
